Couples Counseling

Relationships, whether in friendship or intimacy, take work to be successful! I work diligently to make sessions productive and utilize research-based techniques (see PREP below). The other reality is that couple’s work, whether doing pre-marital counseling for a stronger foundation or couple’s work to move through difficulties, it can be something to look forward to embarking upon vs. dreading it or thinking it is time to "check out" of this relationship.

Prevention, Relationship, Enhancement Program (PREP)
PREP provides resources for those who teach relationship education: PREP, Inc creates practical materials that help facilitators (made up of volunteers, teachers, mental health professionals, clergy, and more) to modify or enhance those dimensions of relationships that research and theory have linked to effective marital functioning. Using techniques of cognitive-behavioral marital therapy and communication-oriented marital enhancement programs, PREP aims to help couples maintain high levels of functioning and prevent marital problems from developing. Topics covered include communication, conflict management, commitment, friendship, sensuality, problem-solving, and emotional supportiveness, among others. PREP curricula generally contain anywhere from 8 to 14 hours of relationship education content are conducted in a group workshop format and/or in individual couple sessions. The PREP program enhances couple communication. The primary technique is called the speaker listener technique which provides a foundation for effective communication.

Sessions generally last 60-minutes although some couples prefer to meet for 90 minutes. Sessions include all relevant materials to include workbooks, relationship enhancement quizzes that can be done in session or at home—they are fun and interactive—and challenge individuals to look at their own part in the relationship as well as explore them in context to interpersonal interactions.

PREP Endorsements: The Institute of Medicine The Institute of Medicine released a report, Frontiers for Preventive Intervention Research, which singled out the most promising, empirically based approaches to prevention currently available in various domains.
